Shipping Infectious or Biological Substances and related materials by air - HS025

Course Summary 

This accredited online training course covers all aspects of Class 6.2 Infectious (or Biological) Substances transportation regulations required to comply with shipping regulations by air and follows the International Air Transport Association (IATA) requirements, tailored for UK shipments. 

 Course covers Category A (UN 2900 & UN 2814), Category B (UN3373), exempt patient specimens, accompanying dry ice, liquid nitrogen, overpacks and preservatives, and GMOs (UN3245). 

Note – HSD facilitate a separate online course for Category B (UN3373) and related materials by road (UK transport only), see HSD training page. 

Duration 

At own work time and pace, typically a total of 4-5 hours required. Trainee can return to the online course at any time and re-start from the place they left the course.  

Delivery 

Online course module provided by SAF-T-PAK Inmark with an integrated online ‘open book’ knowledge quiz, for completion in trainee’s own work time. The supplier reference manual is required (hardcopy or digital). 

Delegates and enrolment 

For departmental payrolled staff appointees who are to pack, mark, label, and document shipments by air of Class 6, Division 2.  

You must be approved by your Head of Department or your Research Group Lead to complete this course.  

Complete the booking form (for HS025) and email to Mark Ariyanayagam (m.r.ariyanayagam@qmul.ac.uk), H&S Manager and Biosafety Adviser, HSD. MA is the named internal facilitator for the course and completion and will provide the reference manual and enrolment details. 

Training is valid for 2 years; if required, repeat for further 2-year period by completing booking form and send to Mark Ariyanayagam. 

Summary Outcome / Content 

Course objectives are for the trainee to be able to apply the Dangerous Goods regulations properly, understand their responsibilities, know both visible and hidden hazards, know the proper Shipping Names required, know the value of using a checklist, and know how to properly pack, mark, label, and document shipments of Class 6, Division 2 material.   

After completing all chapters and corresponding tests, the trainee can print their Certificate of Completion as their record of training. Certificate needs to be countersigned by the internal facilitator.
