Funding
The Barts Charity Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) provides fully funded PhD studentships aimed at developing the next generation of outstanding biomedical researchers.
The overarching goal of the programme is to strengthen biomedical research capacity focused on addressing health inequalities and the major health morbidity and mortality experienced by underserved communities in East London.
From October 2026, the Barts Charity DTP will recruit five PhD students annually over a five-year period. Each successful applicant will be awarded a four-year studentship, providing comprehensive financial and academic support within a vibrant, multidisciplinary research environment at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
Each studentship includes:
Financial Support
- Annual stipend: A tax-free stipend starting at £28,700 per year, with annual increases.
- Tuition fees (Home Rate): Full payment of tuition fees at the QMUL Home fee rate. (Please note: Applicants who are classified as overseas for fee purposes are welcome to apply; however, they will be required to cover the difference between the Home fee rate and the Overseas fee rate.)
Research & Training Support
- Research consumables funding: Up to £32,000 over the duration of the PhD to support project-related costs.
- Conference travel funding: Opportunity to apply for up to £1,000 over the duration of the PhD to support conference attendance.
- Additional Research Training & Student Experience Fund: Access to competitive funding to support enhanced research training and broader doctoral experiences.
Additional Benefits
- Laptop provision: A research-appropriate laptop provided by Queen Mary University of London.
- Further funding opportunities: Appointed students are eligible to apply for the QMUL Postgraduate Research Fund, which provides additional support for conference travel and professional development activities.
