Profile

I am Professor of Clinical Trials and Biostatistics and Director of Barts Clinical Trials Unit. I have an academic background in mathematics (University of Liverpool), epidemiology (University of Cambridge) and a PhD which focussed on breast cancer screening evaluation (Queen Mary University of London). I have been working in clinical trials research for 30 years, starting at the MRC Cancer Trials Office, Cambridge in 1996. I later worked at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit, London and York Trials Unit designing, analysing and leading trials conducted nationally and internationally across a range of health areas (infection, smoking cessation) and with an abiding research interest in cancer.
I am currently co-lead or co-investigator on a number of large population and community-based trials including the PCUK-NIHR funded TRANSFORM trial of prostate cancer screening, two Yorkshire Cancer Research funded studies: the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial and PROTECT-C which offers genetic testing to assess risk of breast, ovary, bowel and/or womb cancers.  I am co-lead of the CRUK funded PACIFIC trial assessing different types of MRI technology and biopsy methods in men referred for prostate cancer tests. Together with my team and collaborators, I am also evaluating other cancer detection technologies such as imaging (PSMA-PET) and circulating tumour cells from fresh blood samples.

Research

Research Interests:

I enjoy applying my expertise in medical statistics, clinical trials and epidemiology to areas that could bring about tangible improvements to population health. I have a long-standing research interest in cancer that spans the prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment spectrum. I have also worked in the fields of infection and respiratory health. I am particularly interested in research addressing health inequalities and high-burden diseases through efficiently designed studies.
