QMplus Media will be phased out as we transition to EchoVideo (Q-Review), which will become our primary video platform.
What is changing?
The university currently has two video platforms, QMplus Media (Kaltura) and EchoVideo (Q-Review). QMplus Media has traditionally been used for pre-recorded videos and student video assessments while EchoVideo (Q-Review) has been used for lecture recording. We are moving to only having one video platform, EchoVideo (Q-Review).
Why are we making this change?
Over the years, the functionality provided by the two platforms has become less distinct, meaning we no longer need two different platforms. Moving to one platform has several advantages:
- A better user experience, all media will be in one place with no need to know how to use two different platforms
- EchoVideo complies with the internationally recognized Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA
- Reduction in costs
When is this going to happen?
Project timeline
The project will be managed in three phases:
Phase 1: Student access (from 8 June 2026)
Students will be able to upload assignment videos to EchoVideo (Q‑Review) from this date.
Phase 2: QMplus Media becomes view only (from 30 June 2026)
QMplus Media will move into view-only mode. This means:
- You can still watch and publish existing videos
- You will not be able to:
- Upload new videos
- Edit existing content
- Create new media
All new video content must be created in EchoVideo (Q‑Review).
You will still be able to download content from QMplus Media during this period and upload it to EchoVideo if needed.
Phase 3: Migration period (June 2026 – June 2027)
Content will be gradually migrated from Kaltura (QMplus Media) to EchoVideo over the course of the year.
- Kaltura will be fully switched off in June 2027
To understand what will be moved automatically, see the “What is being migrated?” section.
What is being Migrated?
What content is being migrated?
The migration project will transfer video content associated with QMplus, QMplus Media and student assignments. This includes videos that have been added to these systems as links or embedded media.
Student assignments
Student assignment videos will be stored in a secure archive. These recordings will not be directly accessible, but they can be retrieved on request by raising a ticket via the Service Desk.
Can I still watch or download videos in QMplus Media?
Yes. All existing videos will remain available during the read-only phase (but not after this period).
During this time, you will still be able to:
- Watch videos
- Download videos
- Publish videos
However, you will not be able to upload or edit content.
Please see the guide on downloading videos from QMplusMedia.
Important:
- There is no bulk download option
- Videos must be downloaded one at a time and then uploaded to Echovideo
Where should I store my videos, I have downloaded from QMplus Media?
You will need to upload your videos to EchoVideo as soon as possible. EchoVideo will be the university’s Video management System going forward and will be the default location for storing and distributing video media. Videos should not be stored on One Drive and SharePoint folders as this systems have storage limitations and there are cost implications to storing large amounts of data.
What about existing links and embedded videos?
Existing links and embedded players will continue to work.
Can I upload new content to QMplus Media?
No. After the 30th of June 2026 you will no longer be able to add new content to QMplus Media.
How do I add new content to QMplus Media?
You cannot add new media to QMplus Media; you should create new content in EchoVideo (Q-Review) instead.
Will I lose access to Kaltura Capture and Kaltura Express?
Yes. Both tools will no longer be available once QMplus Media becomes view only. However, you will have access to very similar tools on EchoVideo (Q-Review).
Can I edit videos in QMplus Media?
You will no longer be able to edit videos after 30 June.
No, editing will not be available in QMplus Media from this date. All editing must be done in EchoVideo (Q‑Review).
Is there recording software for EchoVideo (Q‑Review) ?
Yes. EchoVideo (Q‑Review) provides two recording options:
- Universal Capture – installed application (request installation via an IT ticket). This provides similar functionality to Kaltura Capture.
- Browser Capture – web‑based recording tool, no installation required. This provides similar functionality to Kaltura Express capture.
What about QMplus Media interactive videos?
You will be able to continue to use existing interactive videos but you will not be able to create new ones. This was an experimental feature in Kaltura which they are not supporting going forward.
EchoVideo (Q-Review) does not have an interactive video feature. This also means that we will not be able to migrate interactive videos from Kaltura to EchoVideo (Q-Review).
You can create an interactive video in H5P and embed the H5P link within EchoVideo to add features such as quizzes, hotspots, and knowledge checks that enhance learner engagement. Please refer to the provider's guidance for more information.
Can I create quizzes in EchoVideo (Q-Review) ?
EchoVideo (Q-Review) does not offer a direct quiz equivalent, but it does provide polls that can be used to add interactive questions to videos.
Will the QMplus Course Media Gallery still be available?
The QMplus Course Media Gallery will be available in QMplus during the initial phases of the migration process. Once the files have been migrated then files can be shared across a QMplus course in EchoVideo by organizing files in Courses and Sections or Collections. Please see the relevant guides on Collections and refer to the section on Courses /Classes in the essential guide.
Will “My Media” still be available in QMplus, and is there a separate version in EchoVideo (Q-Review)?
The “My Media” link to QMplus Media will still be available in QMplus during the initial phases of the migration process, and there will also be a separate “My Media” area for EchoVideo, along with an additional link for school or departmental videos.
How do I access EchoVideo (Q‑Review)?
You can access EchoVideo (Q-Review) via the link in your profile menu in QMplus or directly via the Echo video website:
- Go to the Echo360 login page: https://echo360.org.uk
- Select Queen Mary University of London.
- Log in with your QMUL credentials.
Do I create new videos in EchoVideo (Q‑Review)?
Yes. All new recordings, uploads and management of video content should take place in Q‑Review.
What happens to channels and playlists in the MediaSpace portal?
Currently, there is no equivalent MediaPortal feature in EchoVideo; therefore, there are no channels or playlists in the new system. For the time being, the MediaPortal will continue to function as normal.
When the system moves to read-only mode:
-
All existing videos stored in channels and playlists will remain in place. Users will continue to have access to this content until June 2027.
-
However, channels and playlists themselves will not be migrated to EchoVideo.
-
Individual videos will only be migrated if they have been published in QMplus. Any videos that have not been published there will remain in the current system until access ends.
What should I use EchoVideo (Q‑Review) for?
EchoVideo (Q‑Review) should be used to:
- record new video content
- upload video files
- support teaching, learning and assessment
- download final versions if required
- Student assignments
Can I edit videos in EchoVideo (Q‑Review) ?
How do I make EchoVideo (Q‑Review) content available to students?
You can:
- embed or link EchoVideo (Q‑Review) videos directly in QMplus
- use the Activity Picker in QMplus to add Q-Review items
Explore our guide “Embedding and sharing EchoVideo content.”
Are video assignments different?
Assignments use:
- QMplus – for assignment instructions, deadlines, marking, feedback and final submission
- EchoVideo (Q‑Review) – for creating, uploading and managing the video
Can students still submit video work?
Yes. Students continue to submit their work through QMplus as usual.
Where a video is required, students will use EchoVideo (Q‑Review) to create or upload their video as part of the process.
Do existing video assignments need to be updated?
No. Previous submissions are not affected unless the completion is after the 30th of June allowing for late submissions.
Only new or upcoming assignments will follow this updated video process.
What Happens If I Do Nothing?
If you take no action, your existing QMplus Media videos will continue to play where they are embedded within QMplus, QMplus Archives, and QMplus Hub, as these will be migrated.
However, you will not be able to:
- Upload new content
- Edit existing content
- Update or correct videos
- Create new playlists or channels
Note: Content stored in your My Media library, or any other content not included in the migration, will not be carried over. You will need to download this content and upload it to EchoVideo (Q‑Review) if you wish to keep it.
Do I need to move old QMplus Media videos?
You will only need to move old videos if they do not fall within the scope of the migration.
The migration project will be transferring the following:
- QMplus
- QMplus archives
- Mahara (QMplus hub)
- Student assignments
All videos embedded in QMplus, the QMplus archves and Mahara (QMplus Hub) will still be accessible to students to view, and the course instructors to update and edit.
Historical student assignments will be stored in an archive and will be available upon request by raising a ticket via the Service Desk.
If a video does need to be moved, you have the option to either:
- Download it from QMplus Media and upload it to EchoVideo (Q-Review), or
- Download and retain a copy for future reference
Please see the guide on how to download content from QMplus Media, along with the EchoVideo (Q-Review) guide on uploading content.
What about Kaltura videos published on external websites?
If you have a video that has been embedded on an external website please review your website as soon as possible or speak to the person responsible for editing your website. content will need to be downloaded and then reuploaded to either the website itself or EchoVideo (Q-Review) to be republished.
Please see the guide on how to download content from QMplus Media, along with the EchoVideo (Q-Review) guide on uploading content.

Will there be any awareness sessions?
Yes. We are holding a series of EchoVideo (Q Review) awareness sessions for staff. These sessions will provide an overview of the project, share key information about what is happening and why, and explain how staff can access available support and guidance.
The sessions are informational in nature, designed to build awareness and confidence in using EchoVideo (Q Review), rather than to provide detailed hands‑on training.
Sessions are bookable via CPD.
Is there an EchoVideo mobile app?
Yes, EchoVideo has a mobile app that you can use to access your videos and content on the go.
The app is available to download from:
- The Apple App Store (for iPhone and iPad)
- The Google Play Store (for Android devices)
Once installed, you can log in using your institutional account to view recordings and interactive content.
What are the video upload limits and does EchoVideo (Q-Review) support 4K videos?
Can EchoVideo (Q-Review) support collaborative editing of media?
EchoVideo does allow a form of collaborative working; however, it differs from QMplus Media.
- When you share a video with an individual in EchoVideo, you will likely be granting them editing permissions similar to those of the owner, depending on how access is applied.
- Unlike QMplus Media, you do not assign a specific role (such as “editor”) when sharing with an individual — permissions are handled differently within the platform.
Caution:
Please take care when sharing videos, as this may allow others to modify or overwrite your content. We recommend only sharing with individuals who require this level of access.
For step-by-step guidance, please refer to the official instructions provided by EchoVideo. EchoVideo: Sharing and Unsharing Media with Other Users – Support
Can embedded videos be download-protected?
Can students download embedded videos on QMplus?
Yes. Videos embedded on QMplus sites using the EchoVideo (Q-Review) icon or embed code can still be downloaded by students or other enrolled users. Embedded videos cannot be fully download-protected.
How can I prevent students from downloading videos?
To restrict downloading, add the video to a Class and set the Class to “No downloads”. This disables download access for enrolled users.
Where can I find further guidance?
Please see the Classes section of the Essential Staff Guide.
Unable to See the EchoVideo Embed Icon in QMplus?
If you cannot see the EchoVideo Embed icon and can instead see the Kaltura icon (firework symbol) in the QMplus text editor, it may be because you are using a different text editor instead of the standard Atto editor.
To switch back to the Atto editor:
- Select your profile picture or name in the top-right corner of QMplus.
- Choose Preferences.
- Look for Editor preferences under User account.
- Select Atto HTML editor from the Text editor drop-down menu.
- Click Save changes.
Need Help?
If you cannot see Editor preferences, or you are still unable to access the EchoVideo embed option after switching to the Atto editor, please raise a ticket with the IT Service Desk for the attention of the Technology Enhanced Learning Team (TELT). Include details of the module and, if possible, a screenshot of what you are seeing to help us investigate the issue more quickly.
What happens to captions when content is migrated to EchoVideo (Q-Review)?
For videos included in the official migration process, any existing closed caption files will also be migrated to EchoVideo.
However, if you manually download a video from QMplus Media and then upload it to EchoVideo, the existing captions will not transfer automatically. Instead, EchoVideo will generate a new set of automatic captions and transcripts using its own captioning service. As a result, the captions available in EchoVideo may differ from those previously available in QMplus Media.
Important
If you have manually edited or corrected captions in QMplus Media, those changes will not be preserved when a video is manually downloaded and uploaded to EchoVideo.
You should therefore review the newly generated captions in EchoVideo and make any necessary amendments, particularly where captions have been extensively edited or where specific accessibility requirements apply.
Alternative Approach
If preserving existing caption edits is important when manually transferring content, you may wish to:
- Download the caption file from QMplus Media (Kaltura).
- Convert the file from SRT format to VTT format.
- Upload the converted caption file to EchoVideo.
One tool that can be used for this conversion is:
https://subtitleops.com/tools/srt-to-vtt
Key Points
- Video content will be migrated to EchoVideo.
- For videos included in the official Echo360 migration process, existing closed caption files will also be migrated.
- For videos that are manually downloaded from QMplus Media and uploaded to EchoVideo, existing captions will not transfer automatically.
- EchoVideo will generate new automatic captions and transcripts for manually uploaded videos.
- Any manual caption edits made in QMplus Media should be reviewed after migration to ensure accuracy and accessibility requirements are met.
- If preserving edited captions is important during a manual transfer, download the caption file from QMplus Media, convert it from SRT to VTT format, and upload it to EchoVideo.
Please share this information with colleagues who may be affected by the migration.
