Queen Mary University of London Welcomes the Honourable Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant
The Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), Queen Mary University of London, was deeply honoured to host the Honourable Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, for a distinguished visit on 5 June 2026.
The event brought together students, academics, legal practitioners, alumni, members of the judiciary and distinguished guests from across the legal community for an afternoon of discussion, reflection and engagement on the role of law, justice and constitutional governance in contemporary society.
Following a formal welcome, the Honourable Chief Justice delivered a thought-provoking keynote address, sharing insights from his remarkable judicial career and reflecting on the enduring importance of constitutional values, public service, judicial leadership and the rule of law. His address provided a unique opportunity for attendees to hear directly from one of the world's most senior judicial figures.
The keynote was followed by a moderated academic discussion, exploring the evolving relationship between law and society, the responsibilities of the judiciary, and the significance of legal education in preparing future generations of lawyers and public servants.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the student question-and-answer session, which enabled Queen Mary students to engage directly with the Honourable Chief Justice on issues of justice, constitutional governance and professional life in the legal sector. The discussion demonstrated the intellectual curiosity and global outlook of Queen Mary's student community and provided a memorable learning experience for all in attendance.
The University was also pleased to welcome Reena Singh, Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, and the two Chairs, Sanmeet Kaur Dua and Julia Hörnle, whose support was instrumental in facilitating this important visit.
The visit represents another milestone in Queen Mary's ongoing commitment to fostering international dialogue, strengthening global legal connections and providing students with access to leading voices from across the legal profession and judiciary.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Honourable Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, for his generosity, engagement and inspiring contribution to the Queen Mary community. We also thank all those who attended and contributed to making the event such a memorable success.
