Artificial intelligence governance and data privacy compliance are among the fastest-growing specialisms in law and technology today. The EU AI Act, now in force, the UK's evolving AI governance landscape, and the continued reach of GDPR and the UK Data Protection Act 2018 are reshaping how organisations deploy AI systems, handle personal data, and manage regulatory risk. For law students, understanding how careers in this space are actually built, what these roles involve day to day, and what skills and credentials are genuinely valued, is increasingly essential.
On 26 June 2026, the Centre for Commercial Law Studies welcomed two QMUL LLM alumni who have built careers at the intersection of privacy law, AI governance, and digital compliance. In a fireside chat moderated by Anmol Bharuka, both speakers reflected on their journeys since graduating, the realities of their current roles, common misconceptions about careers in AI governance, and the skills students should develop to work in this space.
