Jolyon studied Medicine at the Medical College of St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the 1960s, before going on to build a varied career in neurology, epilepsy care, medical publishing and supporting doctors’ professional development.
Now retired, Jolyon continues to contribute to the medical community as Vice President of the Epilepsy Research Institute UK. He also volunteers at his local theatre, continuing a passion for drama that began during his time as a medical student at Bart’s.
Today, Jolyon is a monthly donor to the Annual Fund, supporting students who face financial barriers while working towards a career in medicine.
For Jolyon, giving back is about ensuring that a student’s background or financial circumstances do not prevent them from reaching their potential.
“I started giving regularly in 2012. I did it because I wanted to support students whose personal circumstances may make studying for a career in medicine even more challenging.”
Having experienced medical education himself, Jolyon understands the importance of creating pathways into healthcare for students from all communities.
“It’s so important that we ensure the medicine and its personnel are representative of the communities they serve.”
Queen Mary is proud of its diverse student community, welcoming students from a wide range of backgrounds. For many, financial support provides vital reassurance, helping them manage essential living costs, focus on their studies and access opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach.
Jolyon believes that widening access to medicine benefits not only individual students, but the future of healthcare as a whole.
“That’s why I support students. I want to encourage others who may be less likely to take the step to pursue a career in medicine.”
Through his regular giving, Jolyon is helping students continue their studies with greater confidence and security, ensuring that talent and ambition can thrive regardless of financial circumstances.
We are incredibly grateful to Jolyon and all our alumni, staff and friends who continue to support our students. Your generosity opens doors, creates opportunities and helps ensure that higher education remains accessible to students from all backgrounds.
