Having worked directly with students across the university for more than three years, Callum sees first-hand the challenges our students face, and the difference financial support can make.

For Callum, the most rewarding part of his role is seeing the difference this support can make.

“In my current role, I’m motivated by the knowledge that financial support can have a real impact, helping students to focus on their studies regardless of their background.”

For many students, rising living costs, unexpected circumstances and limited financial safety nets can create additional pressures alongside the demands of university life.

“Particularly in the current economic climate, I’m seeing increasing numbers of students affected by the rising cost of living. More students than ever require additional financial support throughout the year.”

Queen Mary is proud to have one of the most diverse student communities in the Russell Group. Many students are the first in their family to attend university or come from lower-income households, meaning they may face additional challenges during their studies.

“While our students are resilient and ambitious, many do not have the same financial safety nets that students elsewhere might rely on.”

For students facing financial hardship, support from the Queen Mary alumni community can provide stability at a crucial moment, helping them stay focused on their education and make the most of university life.

“Support from our alumni community provides a vital foundation for students who need it most. It gives them the stability to focus on their studies and make the most of their university experience.”

For some students, this support can be life-changing.

“It can be the difference between completing their degree and having to step away from their studies altogether.”

Through his role, Callum supports a range of funding opportunities, including bursaries, scholarships, hardship funds and the Annual Fund, helping students access opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

“Being able to make a meaningful difference to a student’s experience is incredibly rewarding. I’ve seen first-hand the stress that financial worries can cause, and I’m proud to contribute to easing that burden.”

Alumni-funded support helps students spend less time worrying about financial pressures and more time engaging with their studies, opportunities and future careers.

Callum shares his thanks to the alumni community who make this support possible:

“My sincere thanks go to all alumni who support our students, whether you are giving for the first time or continuing your support. Your generosity makes a tangible difference to the lives of so many students each year.”
